overview, prompt & Rubric
Every society operates with a mixed economic system, combining the influences of market and command models in order to form a functioning economy and government. Individual countries have unique combinations of the market and command influences depending on how countries prioritize different economic goals such as freedom, growth, equity, stability, and efficiency. As citizens we prioritize our economic goals based on our shared values. This values are debated through the political process.
Are we a country of individuals who prioritize the value of individuals who prioritize the value of free choice over shared responsibility, comfortable with the fact that not everyone will be best served by governance that reflects that priority? Or are we a country that prioritized the value of community and shared responsibility over free choice, comfortable that some individual autonomy may be sacrificed? It is my hope that this research project will give you the opportunity to explore different values and thus give you a greater understanding of your own.
Throughout this module, you will build a portfolio of your reading and writing work that will examine the characteristics of both the market and command models. The content from your portfolio will support you in writing your final essay in response to the task.
The essay will address the following prompt:
What are the features of an ideal mixed economy? After analyzing informational texts, data, and editorials write an essay that argues for a distinct combination of market and command characteristics that would combine to create an ideal economic system. Use three to five points of comparison to develop your argument. Be sure to support your position with evidence from the resources.
In addition, Students will participate in a formal class debate about the future of America's economic system using their essays and other research to defend their market and command preferences on different topics (healthcare, welfare, education, taxes, etc.).
